Spinal Abscess Claims

Spinal abscesses have become a rare occurrence since the introduction of antibiotics in medical procedures. However, when they do occur, any delay in diagnosis and treatment can have serious consequences.

If you have suffered from misdiagnoses or delay in treatment, then you may have a spinal abscess claim for compensation.

What is a Spinal Abscess and What Causes One?

A spinal abscess is a bacterial infection in the tissues that surround the spinal cord, built up from the Staphylococcus and Streptococcus species. The abscess is caused when white blood cells are sent to the area of infection leading to a build-up of puss.

The most common causes of spinal abscess’ are:
  • Knife/bullet wounds
  • Septicaemia
  • Boils on the skin
  • Tuberculosis
  • Complications from back surgery
  • Dermal Sinus
Some of the symptoms of a spinal abscess are:
  • Loss of sensation/paralysis below the area of the abscess
  • Sharp pain
  • Sudden onset of pain
  • Weakness that progresses rapidly
  • Fever
  • Loss of control of your bladder/bowels

Do You Have a Claim for Spinal Abscess Compensation?

A medical negligence claim could arise due to:
  • A delay in diagnosis or treatment of spinal abscess
  • Surgical error during a spinal epidural, catheterisation procedure or lumbar puncture
  • Errors during post-operative care
  • Incomplete draining of a spinal abscess resulting in further infection

I recently used Howells' for a claim. After an initial telephone conversation, Amy (our assigned representative) went through the process of our potential claim. She outlined time frames and the strength of our case. We ended up receiving compensation above our expectations. I was thoroughly impressed the team from Howells and would have no hesitation in recommending them to others. They handled the whole process in a manner which inspired confidence, knowing that we were in good hands.
