Anaesthetic Awareness Claims

Anaesthetic awareness happens when a patient under general anaesthetic becomes partially or fully-aware to what is happening during surgery or a procedure and has direct recall of those events.

Thankfully, anaesthetic awareness is rare. However, there has been more media coverage involving medical negligence cases recently, making it a high topic of conversation.

Doctors have conducted research which has concluded that 1 or 2 patients out of every 1,000 experience some sort of awareness.

What Causes Intraoperative Awareness?

The cause of anaesthetic awareness could be:

Incorrect or poor technique
Failure to check equipment
Faulty equipment
Incorrect level of sedation
Wrong method of anaesthesia

H v Hywel Dda University Health Board

This claim relates to an emergency c-section that was undertaken during labour. Sadly, there was a failure to communicate between the anaesthetist and consultant prior to commencing the procedure which resulted in the patient maintaining full-feeling throughout.
