Perforation Medical Negligence

When you think of perforation, you tend to associate it closely with external objects or bones puncturing the skin. It seems highly unlikely that a medical professional could act negligently when dealing with something so blatant. However, perforation can also occur internally. This occurs when there is an infection or build up causing internal organs to rupture.

How Can Medical Negligence Cause Perforation?

  • Through surgery – if the surgeon uses incorrect tools or carelessly perforates an area
  • Misdiagnosis – if the doctor misdiagnoses or fails to recognise the severity of a patient’s symptoms
  • Not progressing with reasonable steps to rectify the perforation

Case Study: Bowel Perforation Medical Negligence

D v Free London NHS Foundation Trust

A claim arose through negligent bowel perforation caused during surgery for the removal of a tumour. There was a failure to diagnose the perforation resulting in further surgery and long-term complications.

Damages were agreed in the region of £325,000.00.
