Having been a member of the industry since 2006, a lecturer in employment law at University of South Wales and an owner of an independent coffee business, Gemma has had an exciting and diverse career.

Joining Howells Solicitors as an associate in 2017 and becoming a partner in 2019, Gemma has contributed hugely towards the success of the firm whilst keeping busy in her spare time teaching dance and looking after her German Shepherd.

Where Were You Born, Where Did You Study, What Professional Qualifications Do You Have?

"I was born in Ottawa, Canada and moved to South Wales when I was just 4 weeks old. I studied at Cardiff Uni for both undergraduate and post-grad. I have an LLB in law and criminology, post graduate diploma in law and hold a practicing certificate as a fully qualified solicitor having completed my training contract in 2008."

Why Did You Choose a Career in Law, Where Have You Previously Worked and Why Did You Choose Employment Law?

"I can’t remember why I chose law, it was probably Ally McBeal! My career choice has proved to be fascinating and very intellectually stimulating.  Most of my legal work is based on problem solving, whether on a technical basis or a practical one which is very rewarding.

I chose employment law thanks to the final seat of my training contract and discovering what a relatable discipline employment law is to everyday life.  I trained and qualified at a top tier Legal 500 firm, Morgan Cole (now Blake Morgan)."

What are your favourite aspects of EL that you particularly enjoy?

"You have to keep your finger on the pulse with legal developments. The more you keep in contact with your peer group, the better you can stay up to date with your legal knowledge and ensure it is robust enough to withstand debate. However, my true favourite aspect has to be working with my clients. I am privileged to meet people from many different walks of life and to be entrusted to support them in often distressing and challenging situations."

What are Your Objectives Within Howells, What Do You Want to Achieve?

"My vision for the employment department is to build a reputation for quality and excellent personal service, to be respected by our peer group and sought after by clients."

Personal Life – Outside of Work What Do You Enjoy Doing in Your Spare Time?

"I love keeping active and so in my spare time you can generally find me hiking with my German Shepherd Dog, jogging or out salsa dancing at various different places. In my quieter moments I love good coffee, good wine and a crime docu-series to keep me entertained."
