Claudia’s Story

I first started studying law when I was in high school, and I always had a fascination with crime documentaries growing up, so I decided a degree in criminology was the best option for me.

While I was studying my degree, I realised that my main interests always came back to law so, after my degree, I completed the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL), followed by the Postgraduate Degree in Legal Practice (LPC). I then secured a training contract at a local Cardiff firm and two years later I’ve just started my new position at Howells as a qualified Solicitor.

How do you get to work?

I live locally so on foot usually, unless it’s raining!

What is your morning routine?

A cup of tea has to be my first port of call, then I like to deal with any emails from clients and prioritise my workload for the day.

What have you enjoyed about the job so far?

There is such a friendly working environment at Howells which is great, but the best part of my job is being able to use my legal expertise to help clients navigate their way through the conveyancing process.

How many clients do you speak to on a daily basis?

I can’t say that I keep count. We receive numerous calls and emails but speaking with clients is a very important part of my day and, naturally, this is something I devote considerable time to.

What is your end goal when it comes to clients?

If each client could complete their sale or purchase transaction feeling that they completely understand the process and that everything has gone smoothly, then I’ve achieved the level of service I strive for. Ultimately, I would like every one of my clients to feel that they have had a professional service with a personal touch.

What would you tell your younger self?

One thing I would tell my younger self is to always be your most confident self and don’t be afraid to go for the opportunities that you really want in case you don’t get them, as otherwise you’ll never know what’s out there.

For anyone looking to get into law, I would say without doubt keep up to date with what’s going on in the areas of law you’re interested in. There are so many ways to find out about hot topics and changes in legislation and case law these days. Blogs like this are a good place to start! It’ll really help when you start practising and especially in an area of law, like property, it helps give the best possible advice to clients.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years’ time?

In 5 years’ time, I see myself successfully running my own team within Howells, ensuring that I uphold the ethos of the firm to provide a professional service with a personal touch.
